Best Sailing & Captained Charters in Orange Beach & Gulf Shores

A sailboat anchored offshore beyond a beach wedding arch

Every other page on this site involves an engine. This one doesn't — or barely does. Sailing here happens in the protected back bays and the Intracoastal Waterway: Terry Cove, Perdido Bay, Wolf Bay, and the canals around Ono Island, where the water is calm, the dolphins work the same routes they always have, and a sunset sail is the quietest two hours of the whole vacation.

The local bench is smaller than the fishing fleet's, and that's the point: a handful of captains, small groups, and boats that take six passengers or fewer on the private sails. Here's how the options split, and who we'd book.

Private sail, catamaran cruise, or captained powerboat?

Private sailing charters rent the whole sailboat for up to six guests with a captain: two-hour getaway sails, four-hour adventure sails, all-day sails, and the signature two-hour sunset sail. It's the couples-and-small-groups product — proposals, anniversaries, and families who want the boat to themselves. Published Orange Beach pricing (as of late 2026, confirm at booking) starts around $299 for a two-hour private sail and $399 for the private sunset sail for up to six.

The catamaran cruise is the middle option: the Cetacean, a 52-foot Hawaiian catamaran sailing from The Wharf Marina, takes a larger group on scheduled two-hour dolphin and sunset sails at a per-person price, with a bar aboard — the sunset departure is adults-only (13+), which tells you the vibe it's going for. And if your group likes the idea but not the sailboat, every marina here will put a captain on a powerboat or pontoon instead — a captained cruise is the same product with a throttle; mention it in the form and we'll point you at the right dock.

What to know before you book

Sailing is weather-honest: light-wind evenings mean some motoring, and summer thunderstorms move departures or cancel them — captains here are good about rebooking, but ask the policy when you reserve. Bring soft-sided coolers only on the private sails (the boats will tell you their drink policy; the catamaran sells drinks aboard and doesn't allow outside alcohol). Sunset sails are timed backwards from sundown, so your departure time shifts with the season — the confirmation, not the website, has your real check-in time, usually 30 minutes ahead.

Kids are welcome on the daytime and family sails (children under eight wear life jackets under way under Alabama practice on these boats), and the back-bay routes mean seasickness is rarely the issue it is offshore. Book summer sunsets several days ahead: six seats is the whole boat on a private sail, and there is exactly one sunset a day.
