Best Fishing Charters in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

A small charter boat carrying anglers across deep blue water

Orange Beach runs one of the largest charter fleets on the Gulf Coast, and Gulf Shores fishes the same water from the west end of the island. The fleet works out of a string of marinas — Zeke's Landing, Hudson Marina, Orange Beach Marina, Sportsman Marina, and the docks around Perdido Pass — and it fishes everything from the back bays to the offshore reefs Alabama has been building for decades. Alabama's artificial reef zones off this coast are among the largest in the country, which is a big part of why the snapper fishing here is famous.

Your main decision isn't where to fish — it's how. Below is how the local options break down, what they typically cost, the Alabama snapper rules that trip up first-timers, and the boats we'd put our own family on.

Party boat, private charter, or inshore guide?

Party boats (also called head boats) sell individual seats on a big vessel. They're the budget-friendly way to bottom-fish for snapper, triggerfish, and vermilion snapper, and the right call for a first trip or a couple who don't want to rent a whole boat. Zeke's Lady out of Zeke's Landing and Hudson Marina's 4-hour public trips (below) are the local standards. The trade-off is company: you fish alongside strangers, on the captain's schedule.

Private charters rent the whole boat — typically 4, 6, 8, or 10+ hours — for your group alone, usually up to six passengers on the classic "6-pack" boats. You pick the style: reef fishing for red snapper in season, trolling for king mackerel and Spanish mackerel, or long runs for tuna, wahoo, and mahi on full-day trips. Per person it costs more than a party boat; split six ways, it's often closer than people expect.

Inshore charters work the back bays — Perdido Bay, Wolf Bay, Little Lagoon, Bon Secour Bay, and the flats around Fort Morgan — in smaller bay boats. It's calm water, light tackle, and casting for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and sheepshead: the best pick for young kids, anyone nervous about the Gulf, and anglers who want to cast instead of drop. Alabama red snapper: the rules are different here

Red snapper is the fish this coast plans its summer around, and Alabama runs its own state season alongside the federal one — do not borrow Florida's dates. In 2026, Alabama's season for private anglers and state-licensed charter boats opened May 22 and ran seven days a week until the state quota was met, while federally permitted charter boats fished a separate federal season (June 1 to October 26 in 2026). Dates change every year and the state can close its season when the quota is projected to be caught, so confirm the current season before you book around it. The 2026 limits were two red snapper per person at a 16-inch minimum, and Alabama requires snapper (plus greater amberjack and gray triggerfish) landed here to be reported through the state's Snapper Check program — your captain handles that on a charter.

On any licensed charter, your fishing license is covered by the boat, and rods, reels, bait, and tackle are included. The crew cleans your catch at the dock (a customary deckhand tip, and sometimes a per-pound cleaning fee, are extra — Zeke's fleet, for example, lists fish cleaning at 30 cents a pound). Several marina restaurants will cook your catch for you; Zeke's Restaurant at Zeke's Landing runs a "Hook It & Cook It" service, which is the freshest dinner on the coast.

What it typically costs

Typical local prices (ballparks as of late 2026, always confirm at booking): party-boat seats run about $69 for a 4-hour public trip at Hudson Marina and about $125 per adult for a 6-hour trip on Zeke's Lady. Private inshore trips start around $550–$600 for 4 hours for up to six; private offshore 6-hour trips commonly run $900–$1,650 depending on the boat, and full 10-hour days on bigger sportfishers reach $2,800 and up before the deckhand tip. Summer dates — especially inside red snapper season — book out well ahead.
